A Rewards Structure Worth Understanding Before You Book That Next Trip

For travelers who put serious mileage on a Bilt card - hotel nights in Tokyo, flights to Lisbon, rental payments between trips - the coming changes to Bilt’s reward structure in 2027 are worth understanding before your cardmember anniversary quietly passes. The window to act is open right now, and it closes permanently on your anniversary date.

Starting January 1, 2027, all new Bilt cardholders will only be able to select the “housing-only” rewards option. That structure earns up to 1.25 points per dollar on rent or mortgage payments, but it does not earn Bilt Cash. Existing cardholders on the Bilt Palladium or Bilt Obsidian card can opt to keep earning 4% Bilt Cash - but only if they actively choose it before their cardmember anniversary date.

That last detail matters more than it sounds.

What the Opt-In Actually Requires

The process takes under two minutes inside the Bilt app. Log in and navigate to the wallet section. Select your Bilt card, then scroll down to “Your card rewards.” Tap the filter icon at the top right of the “Bonus rewards” tile, then tap the “Moving to” bar to open the updated card rewards section. Swipe left to reveal the “Flexible Bilt Cash” option, select it, and hit Save. A confirmation screen will appear, and the blue tile at the top of the screen will indicate that Bilt Cash is locked in for your account.

This functionality is already live in the app - you do not need to wait until January to complete it.

One important limitation: once you make the selection and your cardmember anniversary passes, the choice is final. There is no switching back. If you opt into Bilt Cash and later decide you preferred the points-only structure, that door closes permanently at your anniversary date.

Why the 4% Bilt Cash Option Matters for High-Volume Travelers

Here is where this stops being an administrative footnote and starts being a genuine travel strategy question. The Bilt point accelerator - available to both Obsidian and Palladium cardholders - allows you to spend $200 in Bilt Cash to unlock an extra point per dollar spent on all purchases, up to $5,000 per activation. That accelerator can be triggered five times per year.

Run the math and it opens up something rare: 3 points per dollar on up to $25,000 in annual spending, producing 75,000 Bilt points in a calendar year. For a travel card, that kind of earning potential on general spending - not just on flights or hotels - is difficult to match.

The mechanism only works if you have enough Bilt Cash to keep fueling it. With 4% Bilt Cash active, the cycle sustains itself. You receive $200 in Bilt Cash at your cardmember anniversary. You spend $200 to activate the first accelerator. You spend $5,000 at 3 points per dollar, generating 15,000 Bilt points and - because you’re earning 4% Bilt Cash simultaneously - $200 in Bilt Cash. That $200 funds the next accelerator. The cycle repeats, five times, through the year.

Without the 4% earning rate, the arithmetic breaks down. Under the new default structure, you would receive $600 in Bilt Cash at your cardmember anniversary, plus $50 for every 25,000 points earned thereafter. That is enough to activate the accelerator three times - not five. The final two activations, and the 30,000 points they would have generated, simply disappear.

The Travelers Who Should Probably Stay on Default

Not every cardholder needs to do anything at all. If managing a separate cash-back currency alongside points sounds like friction you do not want - particularly if your Bilt card is primarily a rent-payment tool rather than a daily spending card - the “housing-only” structure may be cleaner.

The default setting stays as-is if you do nothing. As of January 2027, it will also be the only option available to anyone opening a Bilt account for the first time. For cardholders content with earning up to 1.25 points per dollar on housing payments, no action is required.

The opt-in is only for existing Palladium or Obsidian cardholders who want to maintain the 4% Bilt Cash earning capability - and who are confident they will put in the spending volume to make the accelerator cycle work. If $25,000 in annual card spending feels out of reach, the math on five accelerator activations becomes less relevant.

Timing the Decision Against Your Travel Calendar

One framing that helps: think about when your cardmember anniversary falls relative to your travel year. If your anniversary lands in February - as it does for at least one current Palladium cardholder - you technically have until February 15, 2027, to make the selection. But the option is live now, and waiting adds risk with no upside.

If you are mid-way through a year of heavy travel spending - booking international flights, paying for extended accommodation, running regular expenses through the card - the accelerator cycle is the kind of structure that rewards exactly that behavior. Three points per dollar on $5,000 in purchases, replicated five times, adds up faster than the standard earning rates on most competing travel cards.

The practical step is simply to open the Bilt app before you forget. The entire process runs through the wallet section, takes a few taps, and results in a confirmation screen that confirms the selection has been saved. If you hold a Bilt Palladium or Bilt Obsidian card and your anniversary has not yet passed, the window is still open.

After that date, the only question left is whether $200 in Bilt Cash per accelerator activation - five times a year, at $5,000 in spending per cycle - is worth building your card usage around. At 75,000 points annually, that answer will depend on where you plan to go.
