Most people planning a trip to Lisbon, Tokyo, or Patagonia open a browser tab for Expedia or Google Flights without a second thought. Fewer think to check whether their bank has a booking portal that might let them pay with rewards they’ve already earned. If you carry a Bank of America card, that portal exists - and after a significant overhaul in July 2026, it works considerably better than it used to.
The Bank of America Travel Center, referred to as BofA Travel within the booking interface itself, covers the four standard pillars of trip planning: flights, hotels, rental cars, and activities. The July 2026 rebuild, powered by Rocket Travel by Agoda, wasn’t a cosmetic refresh. The update expanded hotel inventory, improved search and filtering tools, added more detailed property information, and introduced the ability to mix and match airlines on round-trip bookings - something the old portal couldn’t do.
Who Gets Access, and What That Access Looks Like
Not every Bank of America cardholder gets the same experience inside the portal.
Cardholders with the Bank of America® Premium Rewards® credit card and the Bank of America® Premium Rewards® Elite Credit Card get the most functionality: they can book travel using rewards points, a credit or debit card payment, or a combination of both. Access for both cards runs through Online Banking or the mobile app. The BankAmericard Rewards® credit card - now closed to new applicants - also allows rewards redemption through the portal via Online Banking.
Cardholders holding the Bank of America® Travel Rewards credit card can book through BofA Travel using card payments, but cannot redeem rewards directly in the portal. They access it through Online Banking. Holders of the Bank of America® Customized Cash Rewards credit card and the Bank of America® Unlimited Cash Rewards credit card can also make paid bookings, but they reach the portal differently - through Erica in the mobile app or via the Search function in Online Banking, rather than a direct navigation path.
The distinction matters when you’re planning a longer trip. If you want to offset the cost of, say, a week in Porto with accumulated points rather than cash, you’ll need one of the cards that supports rewards-based booking. Running a paid booking through the portal on a cash-rewards card still works, but it’s a different value calculation.
Booking Flights: What the Search Tool Can Do
To search for flights inside BofA Travel, you enter your origin, destination, travel dates, and the number of travelers. The portal supports one-way, round-trip, and multicity searches. Cabin class filtering covers economy and beyond, so travelers booking business class for a long-haul flight to Southeast Asia or South America can search accordingly rather than sifting through irrelevant results.
The round-trip mixed-airline option deserves attention. Before the July 2026 rebuild, booking a round trip meant staying within a single airline’s inventory. Now, you can fly outbound on one carrier and return on another - a practical advantage when routing options are limited or when one airline has significantly better availability on a given leg. For destinations with less frequent service, this kind of flexibility often means the difference between a workable itinerary and an awkward one.
Hotels, Cars, and Activities
The hotel search expansion that came with the Rocket Travel by Agoda integration added meaningful depth to what had been a relatively thin inventory. Agoda’s hotel database is broad, particularly across Asia and Europe, which strengthens the portal’s usefulness for travelers heading to destinations where major U.S. booking platforms sometimes show limited options.
Rental cars and activities round out the portal’s coverage. Activities bookings through a bank travel portal remain a relatively underused feature for most cardholders - the instinct is to sort those out on the ground or through separate platforms. Having them available in the same interface where you’re booking flights and hotels means you can, at minimum, compare what’s on offer before committing elsewhere.
The ability to combine rewards with a card payment for eligible cards is a practical detail worth noting. Full redemptions aren’t always the most efficient use of points, and the option to cover part of a booking with rewards while paying the remainder with a card gives more control over how balances get used.
Planning a Trip With the Portal: Practical Considerations
Before using BofA Travel to book a destination trip, it’s worth understanding where the portal sits in the broader landscape of booking options. Chase, Capital One, and Citi each operate travel portals that receive more coverage and, in some cases, more favorable points valuations for their premium cardholders. BofA Travel has historically operated in their shadow, which is part of why many cardholders don’t know it exists.
The July 2026 rebuild changed the product in ways that matter for actual trip planning. Better filtering and more detailed hotel information reduce the friction of comparing properties - a real improvement if you’re trying to evaluate a boutique hotel in Seville against a larger chain option and need accurate amenity information to make the call.
One structural consideration: the portal is powered by a third-party platform, Rocket Travel by Agoda, which means your booking relationship is layered. This is true of most bank travel portals. For travelers who prefer booking directly with airlines or hotels for loyalty credit or easier modification, the portal is better suited for situations where the rewards value offsets those preferences. A straightforward cash booking on a non-rewards card through the portal doesn’t carry the same upside.
The Card You Hold Shapes Every Booking Decision
The right card for a given trip often comes down to what you’re trying to accomplish. Premium Rewards and Premium Rewards Elite cardholders get full flexibility - rewards, card payments, or a split - making the portal most useful for that group when planning international or high-cost domestic trips. The ability to apply points directly against flight or hotel costs at checkout, rather than as a statement credit after the fact, changes how you approach the math before you book.
For Travel Rewards cardholders, the portal still works as a flight and hotel aggregator with card payment. The limitation on rewards redemption through the portal doesn’t eliminate its usefulness - the search tools and mixed-airline booking option apply regardless of how you pay.
Whether BofA Travel becomes a regular part of your planning process or a portal you open once and rarely revisit depends largely on what’s in your wallet and how you tend to use points. For Premium Rewards cardholders with a balance of points sitting unused, a flight to Madrid or a hotel in Kyoto is a more tangible way to extract value than a statement credit - and the portal, after its July 2026 overhaul, is now a functional place to do it.
